Welcome to Auxhart Gardening! I’m Rachel, a small-scale southern gardener growing near Clemson, SC, zone 8a. I mainly garden in-ground, with containers as secondary production spaces.
Knowing where your food comes from is powerful, and empowering, and I believe we can change the world through gardening education.
The agricultural system is broken; we’ve monocultured nearly every major crop, forcing the use of chemical pesticides and inorganic fertilizers to maintain large-scale food production. I believe there’s a better way.
By teaching people to rely on themselves, even just a little, for their food supply, we might be able to create some breathing room for our strained food system, allowing for change to start happening.
By educating people about where food comes from and how to grow it, we can raise awareness about our broken agricultural system and form a community that understands how to fix it.
By forming a community, we can move toward creating real change in the world.
My goal is to educate; yes you can grow food, yes you can do it without chemicals, yes you can do it in your backyard or on your windowsill. And yes, that can make a difference in the world.

    Your video was excellent, unfortunately I did not watch it before pulling all my red onions; cutting the green tops off and peeled so the dirt was removed. So now I guess I will have to give my beautiful red onions away because they will not be able to harvest! First time growing onions, live and learn. Question, is there any way I can harvest at this point? I even saved the tops thinking I could use them for sautéed scallions. Should have watched your video first, guess I was so happy to see how beautifully the onions grew. Thank you

    Zone 6b here, dry as you know what this year. I had to use tap for all annual plants (perennials had 0 issues; deep mulch). Typically this time of year I use my rain barrels to make tea for the emergence of my summer rotation; barrels are dry. Im going to add more barrels for storage.... My success rate with germination (summer) is half of what is typical for me. I think the tap could be the culprit.... I may be wrong( I hope).... I had some excavation done and reseeded my lawn at the same time. The grass seed was exclusively fed tap and is doing fine.... I don't know if soil temperature cooked the seeds or what.... I did screen the lawn; growing grass in the summer is impossible without it... Had to be soil temp, right?

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 4 дні тому

      It's hard to say. Soil temp can definitely be part of it, but to 'cook' the seeds the temp would have to be at least 130F for a week. They could just be dormant waiting for things to cool down. But also idk much about tap water in other areas. I know it's not as good as rain, but if it's safe for people to drink I see no reason it would actively harm your plants.

    Same here with the heat and drought. I finally have ONE lone cucumber on the vine. It's bonkers! We have a cool down coming with like 7 straight days of rain in the forecast after none for weeks. Curious to see what that will do in the garden. Hopefully, everything will be so happy and start fruiting! Unless the forecast changes... Hmm. I wonder if I should harvest the potatoes. Plants are dying back. Was thinking of giving them a little more time but don't want them to split with all the rain expected. Really hope you get some peppers and eggplant! Love the spider! I love them in the garden! I had a baby praying mantis in the garden today. Such a cutie! Take care!

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 4 дні тому

      This time of year our forecast says rain possible every single day, but it's pop-up thunderstorms that if they do manage to hit will leave maybe a tenth of an inch of rain max, so it's so hard to tell when there will be actual rain. I'm happy for you that you're going to get so much good rain though! I'd say get those potatoes out, if the plants are dying back theyre not going to get any bigger. It's just more time for pests to make holes in them. I had a full grown praying mantis the other day, I wish I'd gotten a picture of it! I hope that means there are more, they're so hard to see. But having them is such a good sign!

  • @sazmnaz

    Citrus gal here! I think the general rule is don't let it fruit for about three years so it can grow in size and strengthen its roots. If you think about that tiny plant trying to support that many fruit form its current blossoms it's not going to fair too well. However three years is a long time, life's too short, and the scent of citrus flowers is of the best, especially in the morning, so maybe leave one or two on there once the blossoms create tiny fruit, thats what I normally do! Loving the vids from Sydney Australia 🐞❤

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 4 дні тому

      Thanks for the tips! I'll leave just a couple then. They are kumquats so the fruit should be relatively small, and 1-2 seem like they'd be fine for the plant to support.

    Why would I want genetic purity? That sounds dumb. I want my cucumbers to hybridize and make a special cucumber only for me

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 4 дні тому

      The only reason to keep genetic purity is just for consistency and health of the plant. A hybrid can be cool, but it's rare to get a viable one with characteristics you actually want, and can take several generations and a lot of work to get a hybrid variety to genetically stabilize. So if you're okay with getting different types of cucumbers every year, and having some of them be weak and unhealthy, then you don't need to worry about this.

    • @orsonzedd
      @orsonzedd 4 дні тому

      @@AuxhartGardening I don't think that's true. Between all the Grex and landrace and ultra crosses I'm seeing out there I think genetic purity is kind of dumb and ignores that plants are subject to natural selection. I think it's better to hybridize your plants to adapt to your environment

  • @norma3682

    I know you did this video a long time ago but I hope you see this question. Where do you keep your bucket while it's fermenting? Do you have to keep it in a climate controlled environment or can you do it on your porch? I live in the Midwest and would love to do this but not inside because of space. And advice would help. Also, in case you are still doing this using those buckets, for a few dollars you can buy a drain spout, drill a hole in the bucket and insert the spout. Easier to drain. I did this with my Kombucha fermentation buckets.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 4 дні тому

      Hey! Yep I see all the new comments, regardless of how old the video is. I keep my bucket on my covered porch. I'm not fully sure how much the heat affects it, but it still seems to be working alright. I also have stopped bothering with draining my buckets at all. I haven't noticed it making any difference.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 7 днів тому

      It probably depends where you are. My city water is good enough to drink from the tap without additional filtering. City water will never be as good as rain, but in a situation where you can't collect rainwater, sometimes the garden needs water, and imperfect water is better than no water at all.

    Looks decent, but with a hose I'd end up wasting water just because it's so easy to spray it in large volumes. I'd rather plant native species that don't need supplemental water, and use a watering can for my foodstuffs

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 7 днів тому

      Yes! More native plants! I have pretty lofty goals about not having to water my garden, but this year between being in a minor drought and having a ton of new perennials I'd like to establish, watering has been unavoidable. And the amount of water they need is a lot with how insanely hot it's been. I'll leave this hose running at each plant for 10mins at a time at least once a week right now until (if) the rain picks back up.

    • @AuxhartGardening
      @AuxhartGardening 7 днів тому

      Fresh garlic will always be the most potent, however in the years that I've been doing this I've found that making these products yourself gives you a more potent version of them than you can find in the store. People are consistantly blown away by a whiff of the garlic powder I make; it makes store-bought seem like nothing. The vinegar jars are convenient, and sure the garlic does lose some potency, but it's still quite garlicky. I'd also say I use fresh garlic whenever possible, but the jar garlic is so nice to have around, and sometimes powdered garlic is going to work out better in your recipe. These preparations also last far longer than fresh garlic; my partner has been using up a batch of jar garlic from more than two years ago and it's still good.

    You can mark your garden with urine to keep the deer away. Have your man pee in a jug and pour it around your garden daily.
